It’s been about a day since Firefox 3.5 launch and the results show it was a high success. According to Mozilla’s own Worldwide Real-time Firefox Downloads dashboard, it has been downloaded about 5 million times, with the United Stated accounting for about one fourth of those.
While it may seem a low number compared with Firefox 3’s record setting 8 million downloads on day one, it’s hard to compare because unlike Firefox 3, Firefox 3.5 is also available as an update, so users clicking on Check for Updates… in the Help menu, will get it without counting as a Firefox download. Last year, there was no other way to get Firefox 3 at that time, but downloading it in full.

According to web research company, NetApplications, Firefox achieved 20% market share in two different weeks in last October, for the first time since its debut in 2004.
In the end, Firefox averaged 19.97% for the whole month, half a point up from September where Google Chrome’s debut set it a quarter point back from August. Gains for the month came from Internet Explorer; the now defunct, Netscape, and Safari.

XiTi Monitor has released the latest numbers on browsers utilization in Europe and the rest of the world, announcing it has reached about 29% in March 2008.
Finland, Poland and Slovenia keep leading the pack with 45.9%, 44% and 43.7% respectively. Considering other browsers including Safari and Opera probably have a strong presence in Europe as well, it could also mean that Firefox is used even more than Internet Explorer in those same countries.

In a post in the New York Times web site about the 500 million Firefox downloads milestone reached yesterday, the author, Miguel Left, shared that about 28% of NYTimes.com visitors do it with Firefox.
Statistics for popular web sites (ranked 233 by Alexa) are scarce and it’s always good to know Firefox is doing particularly great in well reputed sites with wide audiences.

XiTi Monitor has released its latest report (FR) on web browsers utilization in Europe and the rest of the world according to a survey during the first week of July.
All European countries saw an increase in Firefox participation with Hungary showing the most dramatic increase from 27.2%, in the latest March 2007 survey, to 39.7%. Overall, Europe grew from 24.1% to 27.8%.
I’ve been tracking XiTi results for a long while now and the chart below shows the market share evolution for the top 8 European countries.

At the global level, all continents show a notable increase with South America taking the largest growth to reach 15.5% from 11.9% in the latest report. Oceania keeps the lead at 28.9%.

A recent report by W3Counters showed some similar results at the global level.

According to W3Counters, a free web tracker from Awio Web Services, all Firefox versions currently account for about 25% of global browser market share.
The latest report, released on June 20, includes about 29 million unique visits to 4,817 sites using the free tracker.
While these numbers differ significantly from XiTi’s global report, two facts remain common: Firefox accounts for a large share of browser utilization and, it keeps growing at a slow pace.
