eWeek: Firefox, a technology that changed the decade

February 18, 2010 - 9:02 pm

eWeek, one of the best enterprise technology magazine, has released a list of 25 Technologies that Changed the Decade, listing Firefox in number 9:

Just a few years ago, the future of the Web and the browser looked bleak. Internet Explorer dominated the market, and Microsoft wasn’t interested in browser innovation. But when Mozilla released Firefox, we finally got real browser choice and innovation. Firefox reignited the browser wars, and today we have more competition and choice in browsers than ever before.

The list also includes 3G, WiFi, AJAX, iPod, Gmail, and other heavy-weight names.

It didn’t take long before we have the first handy Firefox extension for Buzz, Google’s new microblogging service.

UPDATED: Yahoo! to become Firefox’s default search engine on Ubuntu

January 27, 2010 - 10:54 am

According to a recent email by Canonical’s Rick Spencer in the Ubuntu development mailing list, Canonical is planning to change Firefox’s default search provider to Yahoo! starting with forthcoming Lucid Lynx, due in April.

The change will also change the default home page from the current Ubuntu customized Google search page to a Yahoo! home page.

The post emphasizes that previous user choices of search engines will be respected, so the change will apply for new users only (new installations, or new local users).

Users turn to Firefox following IE warnings

January 23, 2010 - 9:43 pm

Following last days’ German, French, and Australian government warnings about the risks of Internet Explorer’s security vulnerability, and recommendations to use other web browsers, Mozilla has seen a huge increase in daily downloads, as reported by Ken Kovash, from the Mozilla Metrics team.

Numbers doubled in France from an average 40K to 80K, in Australia from 12K to 32K, and Germany from around 70K to around 150K.

Firefox calendars for 2010

December 31, 2009 - 2:13 pm

To keep Firefox on sight at all times even when your computer is off, here are a couple of 2010 calendars for you to print, hang, and share with your friends, family, and colleagues.

There’s a project for each month. Can you identify all the logos? Can your relatives and friends?

Support Namoroka, the national park. Then Manu?

December 16, 2009 - 11:28 pm

Spread Firefox Affiliate ButtonMozilla reminds us that Namoroka is not only Firefox 3.6 codename, but most importantly, the name of a national park in Madagascar. In case you didn’t watch the movie, it is home of non less than eight species of cool lemur.

Mozilla is now driving a donation effort to raise $10,000 to help the lemur conservation efforts of the Madagascar Fauna Group.

It is easy to give: Mozilla will collect the money via Paypal, and give it to the Madagascar Fauna Group.

You can also grab a button to display in your web site or blog, or post this link to your favorite social network:

Is this a good time to propose Manu as the code name for the next Firefox release? Manu (ES) is the largest Peruvian National Park in the Madre de Dios and Cusco departments, near the city of Cusco, and home to several indigenous tribes, more than 20,000 species of plants and about 4,000 of animals, including this guy, known as cock of the rock or tunki (in Quechua language):

tunki

After all it seems it is time for a South American national park code name following Deer Park (1.5, North America), Bon Echo (2.0, North America), Gran Paradiso (3.0, Europe), Shiretoko (3.5, Asia), and Namoroka (3.6, Africa). There were also several pre 1.0 releases named after New Zealand suburbs. :D

A Microsoft nod to Mozilla?

December 15, 2009 - 1:12 am

You may have heard or read about last week’s dialog. If not, here it is in brief:

  • First, Eric Schmidt, Google CEO, scared a few millions people by saying it’s not possible to keep things in private. His suggestion: just not do that stuff. Media goes crazy.
  • Mozilla’s Asa Dotzler suggested using Microsoft’s Bing search engine, as it has the “less bad” privacy policy. As Mozilla’s deal with Google accounts for about 90% of its revenue, he’s in brief, saying: screw the bottom line, the mission is first. Business as usual for Mozilla. Media goes crazy about integrity.

And today, someone with enough sense of humor at Microsoft, decided to feature a firefox as Bing’s background photo!

Set your destination for new tabs in Firefox

December 13, 2009 - 11:16 pm

If the white space you get when opening a new tab in Firefox is not your thing, NewTabURL, a Firefox extension developed by Sogame, should help.

Once installed you can set your home page, the current page, or a web address (URL) you enter as the content to show when adding a new tab.

NewTabURL

Pretty simple, pretty useful. Try it at Mozilla Add-ons.

The obvious solution to tab clutter: filter them!

November 26, 2009 - 9:41 am

Here’s a great Firefox extension that helps find the tab you’re looking for among dozens. Tab Filter/Tab Search, developed by Tito, adds an option to Firefox tabs’ context menu so you can filter in the ones that match by title, address or both the terms you entered. As you start typing, tabs that don’t match the criteria are removed until you get the wanted ones.

Tab Filter/Tab Search

To get all your tabs back, just press Esc or close the filter bar.

It works really great. My only complaint is that Tab Filter/Tab Search desperately needs a keyboard shortcut to activate the filter bar. (And a shorter name!)
