Here’s a brief timeline of Firefox downloads milestones:

• Firefox 1.0 is released on November 9, 2004, 1200 days ago.
• 100 million reached on October 19, 2005, 344 days later.
• 200 million reached on August 2, 2006,  287 days later.
• 300 million reached on February 12, 2007, 193 days later
• 400 million reached on September 7, 2007, 207 days later.
• 500 million reached today February 22, 2008, 168 days later.
• 1 billion reached today July 31, 2009.

One notable thing is the first half of the billion took about 3 years and a half, while the second one less than a year and a half, due to Firefox popularity reflected in the global market share increase, currently hovering 30%.

Spread Firefox has an ongoing campaign to celebrate the mark: take a picture of yourself or your group in a beautiful location showing cool Firefox gear, and send it to fxbillion@mozilla.com, until today.

On Monday, Mozilla will launch 1 billion downloads + You featuring the submitted pictures.

In case someone may get confused, this number has nothing to do with the total number of users, which is currently estimated at around 250 million. A user could download Firefox more than once in the last four and a half years, while a single download could have been installed in more that one computer. Without counting cyber cafes where a single installation can be the main Internet access point for several users.

To celebrate this very important milestone, Spread Firefox is running a global campaign to bring together Firefox users and fans showing how they enjoy using it.

Here’s how you can join the celebration:

• Take a picture of yourself sporting some cool Firefox gear in a wonderful place.
• Email your picture in .jpg or .png (ouch!) formats to fxbillion@mozilla.com

As in the past, this is a cool way to help make the web a better place. But now, you can do winning even more!

It is easy to do:

1.Register at Spread Firefox. I’ve been a member for about five years and can assure you you will get no spam, no annoying mail.
2. Get a banner or button with your customized affiliate code. Available in a wide variety of shapes, colors, styles, and sizes. A new smart button will even show a get, or  upgrade button depending on what browser and version a visitor is using.
3. Publish the banner or button anywhere in the web: your email signature, your blog, Facebook, tweet it, IM it, spread as you wish. Just make sure not to spam, spim, or otherwise annoy or cheat.
4. Track how many people have followed your links to learn about Firefox.

We’re getting closer to Holi, a Hindu festival of colors, and to celebrate it, a new e-card is now available for all people to share the colors and the cuteness with relatives and friends.

This is part of a Spread Firefox campaign initiated back in February when FuzzyFox, a Firefox campus rep launched a web page to send Foxkeh valentine e-cards. The page is now evolving into a full e-card project and this is the first outcome with the help of the Mozilla Japan team and their great cartooning skills!

Thanks to sanopup of Mozilla Taiwan, I just learned about Foxmosa, another Firefox mascot coming from Taiwan (formerly Formosa) and is also offering a Valentine e-card you can send to your significant other to express your geekiest vows. For extra points, tell your hubby what this Chinese card says:

Do you vow to help your significant other to use Firefox and experience the wonders of the Internet together, and find the solution together when he/she encounter any problem?

Clicking on the “I do” button will send the card with the messages and the link to download Firefox.

Ken Saunders, presents a collection of snow globes, desktop wallpapers, and tree ornaments available in a variety of sizes, colors, and styles. Note that the snow globe animation is only visible in Firefox 3 and Opera 9.5 and later versions as it is an animted PNG file.

Jamey Boje, (aka Graphicsguru), brings a wide variety of holiday themed Firefox banners to decorate web sites, blogs, and email while spreading the word about Firefox.

And don’t forget the nice holiday Firefox themes available.

This past weekend, Mozilla sponsored and participated in the San Francisco Green Festival, “the largest sustainability event in the world”, according to GreenFest’s about page.

Along with some print materials for the event, Mozilla prepared some good looking organic themed web buttons. Mozilla has been using the term to help explain Firefox as a product and the project behind it for a few months now.

On phase 1, which runs until March 16, competitors will enter their designs by uploading them to Flickr, tagging them as “FF3 Tcontest”, joining the FF3 T-shirt Design Contest group and adding their designs to the pool. Everyone will be able to see the entries as they are posted to Flickr. Five designs will be selected by Mozilla and will pass to phase 2.

On phase 2, people will vote for their favorite design from the 5 finalists to choose a winner, who gets her design added to the Mozilla Store catalog, a T-shirt with the winning design and a $250 Amazon.com gift card. The four runner-ups get $50 amazon.com gift cards and T-shirts.
