Mozilla Labs has announced the winners of the latest Mozilla contest, Extend Firefox 3, which awards the best new and updated extensions for Firefox 3, as well as a the best in the music category, sponsored by Last.fm.

Not surprisingly, among the winners is Pencil, developed by Duong Thanh An, a very capable extension that provides a complete environment for designing user interfaces in easy drag-and-drop fashion.

Another winner is HandyTags, by Remy Szymkowiak, which suggests tags for a web page based on your past used tag, author tags, delicious users’ and those suggested by its own keyword engine, and present them as buttons for one click tagging.

The third winner in the new extensions category is Tagmarks by Felipe Tassario Gomes, which I’ve seen reviewed in several sites this week, but I’m still not convinced icons can replace words for tagging without customization options.

In the updated category, the handy Read It Later, developed by Nate Wiener, and TagSifter by Chiisai Tsu, provide a great aid for procrastination and tag navigation respectively. Bookmarks Preview, brings Apple’s cover flows to the Library.

In the music category, winner Fire.fm by Jorge Villalobos and José Enrique Bolaños, provides tight integration between the location bar and Last.fm.

Congratulations to all the winners! Hope to see more similar contests in the future.

What’s the URL for Fire.fm? There was no link to that in the story like there were with the other ones.

It is interesting to see that the vast majorities of the winners actually address the problems that exist in functionality of Firefox itself as it is. Probably it should hint FF developers that some functionality should be improved a lot internally instead of sending the users to add-ons.
