Firefox logo getting an update?
Along with the Firefox 3 icons preview, Alex also announced that the Firefox application icon will be updated. Since the Firefox app icon and logo are one and the same it could be safe to say that the Firefox logo will be updated as well, though not necessarily: it could mean just a simplification of the current one to make it more recognizable, specially at smaller sizes.
In any case and fortunately, Jon Hicks, one of the original designers of the Firefox logo is in charge of the update. On 2004, Jon, together with Steven Garrity, Daniel Burka (concept) and Stephen Desroche (original sketch) designed the now well known logo when Firebird changed its name to Firefox to settle a dispute from the Firebird project for using the same name.

As if it wasn’t enough teasing, Jon has posted a minuscle piece of the new icon sketch.

Do you have an idea of what’s that? Fire, right. Thanks. Anyone else?
If you are greedy enough you may want to grab some soon-to-become-collectibles items from the Mozilla Store.

It’d be nice if the new icon showed the animal’s face instead of it facing away from us. it could even have the same outline as it does now

I presume there’s more of the teaser logo than we’re being shown, meaning something’s being intentionally hidden from us. Which I find rather contrary to the spirit of open source.
If the logo’s not ready yet, don’t show us anything. If you’re happy to show us the current draft, then show us the whole current current draft. Don’t knock around with small teasers designed to excite and entice. It exploits the fact some people know more than others, which isn’t how open-source should be.
