Known Firefox issues on Leopard

By Percy Cabello

Firefox 2.0.0.8 has just been released and since it will be the current version by the time Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) comes out next week, Josh Aas, Firefox developer and Camino project leader has released a brief list of known issues Mac users may face when they update.

  • Installing the Flashgot plugin will trigger security warnings when you restart. This appears to be because Flashgot contains executable binaries that trigger new security warnings in Mac OS X 10.5. Installing Flashgot is safe, but you will have to click through those warnings. Do not click “Cancel” or your browser may enter a bad state.
  • Embedded WMV media using the Flip4Mac plugin renders at 1/4 size.
  • The Advanced Preferences tabs render incorrectly.
  • Firefox 2.0.0.8 does not download to the new Downloads directory by default yet. It still defaults to the desktop. You can change your download destination manually.

All these along with some other unconfirmed bugs should be resolved in the next Firefox update, 2.0.0.9.

Users may also notice a couple of cosmetic issues: lack of support for resolution-independent UI and rounded-corner context menus. Nothing to lose your sleep to, but in this case the fix won’t come until Firefox 3. Think 2008.

Thanks for posting. I was just wondering a few days ago if Firefox and Leopard would play well together.

Looks like drop-down () menus are not working in 2.0.0.8 and Leopard.

Drop-downs sometimes don’t work in 2.0.0.9 under Leopard either.

I’ve run into a a problem with bookmarks since installing Leopard. Adding or deleting bookmarks only lasts for as long as the session. After quitting, deleted bookmarks come back and added bookmarks disappear. This may be related to the alert box I get every time I relaunch the browser – that Firefox has quit, asking me do I want to restore the session or start a new one.

I’m running the update to 2.0.0.9, installed this morning, and it hasn’t fixed this problem.

I have problems with 2.0.0.9 in Leopard with drop-down select boxes, too.

2.0.0.9 and Leopard issue: clicking on the dock icon for Firefox does not bring the window into focus – anyone else have this problem?

After installing OS X 10.5 (and updating to 10.5.1), I cannot download anything in Firefox. I even reinstalled Firefox v2.0.0.10.

I get the message “… could not be saved, because an unknown error occurred. Try saving to a different location.”

I changed the location to the Desktop, but it still insists on downloading to the new Downloads folder. I expect that is the problem. Any ideas on how to fix this. Opera works fine. I have not tried Safari (which I deleted because it did not work with many websites… which is why I have been using Firefox). Thanks!

This is really annoying! And it still keeps happening with OS X 10.5.1 and Firefox 2.0.0.11.

Web pages containing Thai characters are not displayed correctly. Example: http://www.khonkaenview.com/

If this page is bookmarked, the Thai part of the title is unreadable. Thai characters are displayed correctly in the window frame title.

Firefox 2.0.0.11, Geko 20071127
Mac OSX 10.5.1

The same page is displayed correctly by Safari.
It is also displayed correctly with Firefox under Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger)

Firefox 2.0.0.12

I’m also having problems with Thai fonts displaying correctly under OSX 10.5 (Leopard). Thai fonts are displayed correctly in Safari and Firefox displays Thai fonts OK with OSX 10.4 (Tiger).

2.0.0.9 and Leopard issue: clicking on the dock icon for Firefox does not bring the window into focus – anyone else have this problem?

This issue is happening to me in 10.4 and 10.5. Thought it was a Firefox 2.x issue, but it is happening in 1.5 (with Leo 10.5.2) as well. Command-tab function does not work along with the dock (must right click dock to get the page to focus). Just tested Firefox with Apples Mail app and finder and it was working. Opened up Excel and it stopped!

Please provide a fix!

Using OS X 10.5.2 and Firefox 2.0.0.12, the issue is Thai fonts and several other Asian fonts that display as ??? marks. This issue does NOT exist on Safari nor does it get fixed even by manually trying every Thai font encoding option in Firefox options. This problem existed also with 10.5.1.

The Thai font problem does not exist with firefox 3.0b3
Replace Firefox 2.0 by Firefox 3.0 and you will be happy ever since like me :)

Firefox 3.0b3 can be downloaded for Windows, MacOSX and Linux:

It is a Beta, but it works fine for me

there is and has been a compatability issue with FireFox/Lepoard OS/Yahoo and MAC. It will not retain my log in and will not let me keep yahoo Classic as my browser. It reopens to beta evertyime I leave Firefox and does not recognize my previous login,
