Firefox Java plugin may not work on Vista
Published: October 22nd, 2007
Firefox users who updated to the latest Firefox 2.0.0.8 version released last week may find that the Java plugin doesn’t work.
Apparently one of the dozens of bugs fixes uncovered a Java plugin misbehavior that prevents it from starting properly and crashing the browser. A bug has already been filed on Sun’s bug tracking system.
Mozilla developers are working on the issue and planning a new update. Firefox 2.0.0.9 is expected to fix this and other regressions involving pages layout problems, and an increase in Flash related crashes on Mac OS X.
A workaround for the Java plugin problem is described in the related bug:
- Right click on the Firefox icon and select Run as administrator. This will allow the Java plugin to make the necessary updates to the registry.
- Accept the User Access Control (UAC) prompt
- Visit any site which use a Java applet, Java should load normally
- Restart Firefox. Java should work normally now as the registry entries are already in place.
You can leave a response, or trackback from your own site.

Great workaround, but for one thing: I am already running as an administrator in WinXP. Java 1.6 still crashes Firefox 2.0.0.8.

Also can’t get Java plug in to work with new release Firefox. I’m on Vista and the ‘Run as Administrator’ idea doesn’t work either. Hope this is fixed in 2.0.0.9 and hope it’s out soon. Having to go back to Internet Explorer. Oh no!! Sorry!

“Run as administrator” didn’t help for me either. I am already in the Administrator group on my WinXP installation.
I can duplicate the problem by visiting http://www.hotellaplaya.com/ and clicking on “What’s New” — is that the same bug discussed in this thread?

The fix suggested doesn’t appear to be working for me.
Vista Ultimate, Firefox 2.0.0.8
Everything is fine with the much hated IE7. Any other suggestions?

Perhaps the problem I am seeing is not the same as the one being discussed here. WinXPPro, FF2.0.0.9, Java Plug-in 1.6.0_03.
I can duplicate the problem by visiting http://www.hotellaplaya.com/ and clicking on “What’s New.” FF reports (status bar) that it is loading data, but it is not, nor will it load any other site. It will appear to close, but leaves a >50MB process running. Is that the same bug discussed in this thread?

nope, not my bug… I am running Vista, and Java would just not open. And it was just the 2.0.0.8 version, the update set everything back to normal.

My problem with Firefox 2.0.0.9 Vista is every time I go to print I get the following message:
Firefox has stopped working A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. I can print out of Internet Explorer but I prefer Firefox. I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it to no avail.

I have Firefox 2.0.0.11 and Vista, and I also had this problem (try to load a page with a Java applet, and Firefox freezes). This work-around seemed to fix things.

I need to run java applets on my machine running vista. I get the message “no plugins installed” “java runtime environement” “not available”. What’s the problem? Is there a fix?

I am running VHP and firefox 2.0.0.12 and still can’t get java to work. The fix posted by CJ on January 30 should be in no way nessesary. I wonder if it’s more a Mozilla or Microsoft problem.
