September 19, 2007 - 1:16 pm

NComputing X300The Macedonian government has announced that it plans to deploy 180,000 Ubuntu desktops to students around the country.

The country-wide project will be based on NComputing’s X300 solution that allows sharing a single PC resources with up to seven thin clients running on virtual Ubuntu desktops that come loaded with OpenOffice, Firefox, Thunderbird, Evolution, and Wine.

This is yet another opportunity to extend Firefox and other open source products user base. But most importantly, an opportunity to reach students who will now learn about other software options in terms of capability, security, price, licensing and the possibility to extend their tools to suit their needs if they care enough to learn the necessary skills.
