Greener overnight downloads with Firefox
Do you feel guilty when you leave your computer on all night to let Firefox finish your downloads? You should.
But here’s a way to get rid of the guilt. Auto Shutdown is a Firefox extension (Windows only) developed by InBasic, that adds a check box to the download manager to tell Firefox to shut down your computer after all downloads are finished.
Smartly, when downloads are completed it doesn’t suddenly shut your computer down but displays a warning and a one minute count down before effectively shutting your computer down unless you cancel. Notice however that some dialog windows like those prompted when you have an unsaved document may prevent a shut down.
One thing I don’t like is the message window that appears when I activate the auto shutdown option. It is just obtrusive as it is the permanent status bar icon. I would like the status bar icon to appear when I have activated Auto Shutdown only instead and get rid of the message window.
Anyways, it is a good way to start or increase your environment friendly habits.
You can get Auto Shutdown from Mozilla Add-ons.

Thanks! Great tip! I’m always trying to minimize the amount of power I use, on the computer and otherwise. This will be useful next time i download something heavy!

This is a nice to have, since many processing applications already have this (think DVD burning and DVD ripping apps). I am usually downloading things from BitTorrent all night anyways, so I won’t be using it.
Good to have for consistency, but I doubt it will be used by more than 1% of the people.
