Explore gigapixel images with HD View plugin for Firefox
Microsoft Research has released a new beta version of its HD View plugin now with added support for Firefox. HD View provides a dedicated mechanism to navigate gigapixel images residing in a remote server.
Once installed, the use is pretty simple. You access a site serving HD photos via HD View and the plugin gets an initial panoramic view. From then you can pan dragging the image in any direction, or, most interestingly, zoom with the + and - keys or scrolling the mouse wheel just like Google Maps or Google Earth.
In the screenshots below you can see the initial panoramic view and the max zoomed image focused on the terrace of the UFO crowned building. Of course the merit is of the data rather than this or any other plugin

It comes with an autotone switch that dynamically enhances visibility on shadowed areas providing a better and clearer image as you zoom in and out. It can also generate a bookmark for a specific zoom/pan combo if you want to share a specific area.
The HD View plugin, is available as a 524 KB Windows Installer file from Microsoft Research. Believe it or not, it doesn’t require even a Firefox restart.

Except that it is “unable to find Firefox version” for nightly builds :-p

It works in Firefox 3 beta 1, but places black ‘marker pen’ cross outs on FF part http address bar, throbber, some tabs and over reload and stop buttons.
That may be a FF redraw problem?
You can move around and zoom in and out - very clear.
Windows media Player plugin still can’t find Firefox 3. Flash does not work properly.
