Have you heard about Zonbu, the green PC? It’s no fresh news but I learned about it recently and I must say it looks lovable. Not that the looks are too good but the notion of a computer with an appliance approach offering 99% of what most parents and grand parents need and no movable parts which means no noise and 15W of power consumption for $99 is some very good news to me.
Even more after learning that Firefox is the browser of choice for such a cool product. The Firefox edition currently shipped is version 2.0.0.4 bundled with a content filter extension that provides parental control and Showcase, an extension that shows tabs thumbnails for easier tab switching. It also features the Mostly Crystal theme, developed by Cat Thief, which makes it look more modern and blend better with the customized Linux-based Zonbu OS.

Firefox updates are managed by a centralized update software. “This allows us to maintain a fixed
configuration and perform extensive QA testing on what gets shipped out. “, commented David Silver, a Zonbu representative.
Along with Firefox, Zonbu includes OpenOffice.org, Skype, Adobe Reader, MPlayer, Nvu, F-Spot, a photo organizer and an assortment of games and publishing software.
Zonbu comes with just 4GB of flash memory storage (3GB available) but a monthly $13 fee adds 25GB of online storage and access to automated updates.
