Planned features for Firefox 3

In today’s Firefox 3 (code name Gran Paradiso) meeting, developers released a preliminary list of requirements for Firefox 3. The new target release date is sometime in the third quarter this year.
Among the list of mandatory requirements, read, what is the most likely to be included in Firefox 3 we have:
- Improved interaction with Add-ons: clearer, more coherent language; less steps to install; more visible way to configure add-ons, probably to be moved back to the general Options window, which I hope deeply; more noticeable alerts when updates are available; a permanent restart Firefox button.
- Support for remote bookmarks, bookmarks and history annotation.
- Files could be handled by web services. If I am reading this correctly, this could mean you would be able to click on an attached document and open it with something like Writely or Google Documents. And perhaps, as I asked Santa, the ability to redirect mailto: links to web email services.
- A much needed print support to prevent cut paragraphs and true WYSIWYG.
- The much requested MSI installer which will be a much welcomed improvement for IT administrators as it will ease deployment and updating of Firefox across a company.
- In the security front: support for Microsoft CardSpace and OpenID (check tomorrow’s article for more coverage on this). Smarter credentials handling.
- Airbag, the Google backed open source crash reporting tool will replace currently licensed TalkBack.
Among the highly desirable requirements:
- A private web browsing mode. I guess this would mean no cache, history, password or entered form information storage.
- Save web pages as PDF files, integrated with history. That would be just awesome.
- Support pause/resume downloads across sessions.
- Make Firefox help accessible only while online. Not sure how good and idea this is.
- Microformats support.
Nice to have:
- Unified bookmarks/history. Does this mean no Places?
- Support for Windows Vista parental controls. I really hope this one goes up in the priority list. This would be the first concrete downer for Firefox when confronted with Internet Explorer 7.
- Tab grouping and expose. This sounds like Internet Explorer 7 Quick Tabs or the foxPose extension.
- Windows Group Policy. Another blessing for IT administrators.
- Allow add-ons to be installed without rebooting Firefox.
- Simplified interface to manage downloads. Can it be simpler? Maybe exposing commands currently placed in the context menu.

If you have the Google Toolbar, you can already do this with GMail. It would be nice if they integrated it into the main browser, though.

I did not think it was possible to do a major version number release with less features than 2. However it looks like they are going to find a way.
2 had spell checking and long overdue completion of the search function (sorting, add remove).
3 looks like it will have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in the way of new features. It looks like a administration point release.
The only people who will be interested are IT administrators and delusional parents who think that parental controls work.
What an absolute snore. The innovation curve for Firefox is akin to an avalanche where 1 was the pinnacle and everything is crashing downwards ever since.

I can just imagine the conversation ie7 has parental controls.. yes but firefox can save a webpage as a pdf?? Why the heck do people want to save a webpage which is easily accessible, can be got to via just a url, in an uneditable format, which they can do today anyway if they install pdfcreator (free and open source).
You guys seem to be dropping the ball.. I hope somneone really picks up and focus’s on the real priorities… From the poll, it looks like most of the people agree with me.
Why don’t you make an msi and focus on allowing corporate users and errr parents with kids to properly use firefox. Implement official group policy add ins, msi files and parental controls.. Wake up guys, focus on the larger markets.

Grant, I agree that parental controls is critical. How good it is depends of course on how it is implemented. Whitelisting could be a good option for some parents.
PDF printing is also critical but for other reasons. There are many cases when I have needed to share for example a computer configuration at some vendor, or a certain report or data view in a reporting application, and sending a link just doesn’t work because it won’t replciate what I am seeing and want the other people to see. It is great as well for archiving. Say, your current bank account statement, for an incorrect charge, or a payment, etc.
MSI is already a must have and group policy a good to have.

I miss any Mac specific improvements like a separate Intel and PPC version, implementation of keychain, faster rendering engine and improved graphics and font rendering.

Why a permanent restart Firefox button? That doesn’t sound right. How about making Firefox able to load newer versions of add-ons on-the-fly? Seamless update of add-ons. Maybe look into how antivirus softwares update their engines on-the-fly?

pd, those aren’t the only improvements–merely the userspace features. Remember that Firefox 3.0 will be based on Gecko 1.9, which means that, among other things, it will finally pass the Acid2 test (also will have more complete CSS2.1 and some more CSS3 support, like
border-radius. It will also use Cairo for graphics, meaning faster and high-quality rendering.[Reply]

While there are some good features on there the one big feature thats missing is an improved zoom facility, firefox is limited in that its not so much a zoom as a text enlarging feature. you can’t focus on images. When you do zoom your likly to break the look and feel of the site. I’m surprised this isn’t higher on the list of things todo.

Pdfcreator, is free, open source and will work with all your applications….! Pdfs is imho unneccessary bloat… when there are enough dedicated apps to do it and can do it much better. No point reinventing the wheel.

I think it would be great to have an upload progress meter built into the browser. With increase in rich, user-submitted content, there is a need for feedback on the progress of a POST action.

Am I the only one who thinks that, other than “A much needed print support to prevent cut paragraphs and true WYSIWYG.”, the list of main priorities includes nothing that should be a priority? Seems like there are alot of things Firefox needs more than those, like the ability to have a bookmarks toolbar more than one line. And they really should take the ideas behind the Copy Plain Text extension and make it a part of the core functionality, as well as the PDF Download extension and add the ability to control ALL document types with the option of opening in the browser, saving to disk, etc.

Most large Microsoftized sites won’t even consider the use of a browser that can’t be managed by Group Policy. The ability to force the browser to use a proxy, for example, is an absolute requirement. The MSI install and GP support will get Firefox into a lot of large sites and probably lead to a significant increase in the rate of adoption within a year or two.

Download queueing would be nice… ex., max simultaneous downloads w/ automatic FIFO. It would be nice if the queue cached/managed session and/or cookies so that downloads from authenticated sites may correctly resume, ala poor man’s getright.

What I would love to see in the new Firefox is the ability to send a tab to another window! For example, one Firefox WINDOW is all weather reports, the other is cars, but if I accidentally open a car-related topic in the weather WINDOW, I should be able to right click on the TAB and choose ’send to Firefox [2]‘ or ‘[3]‘ depending on the WINDOW ID. The WINDOW ID should be customizable so I can label it ‘Weather’ or ‘Cars’ while I’m working. It just makes organization a lot better and have found many other users are wishing for the same. So whaddya say guys? C’mon… give us a little love.

So I see the infamous memory leak isn’t a top priority still. Maybe we’ll see that fixed in 4.0. Though I’m not holding my breath.
Also, the Download manager needs a performance boost. When you get too many downlaods in there it slows to a crawl to browse through them.

That list seems slanted towards the early adopter/power user (e.g. remote bookmarks and handling links with web services). It would be nice to see more attention paid to polishing the UI. For example, you could fix some of the small broken bits of the UI in Firefox 2, for example:
- history search doesn’t work on the Mac (bug #338833)
- a tooltip blocking the bookmarks bar when dragging a proxy icon (bug #312852)
- menus should auto-scroll if you hover above/below them (bug #63295)
- there’s no way to specify an arbitrary application to handle unknown file types on the Mac (bug #352142)
- standard Mac keyboard shortcuts (e.g. Command-Option-F to select the web search box) aren’t supported (bug #348472)
These quirks are disappointing to those used to the relative refinement of the interfaces of most Mac programs, and I imagine they limit your competitiveness versus Safari.

Along with remote bookmarks, it would be really useful if FF included a feature to synchronize extensions across multiple computers. AFAIK, there is no way to do this with any extension currently in production. FEBE 4.0 comes close, but this is only a backup solution and only works on Windows.

They should fix the crashes on windows server 2003. It crashes left and right…. sucks. I keep opening up IE for yahoo, which is where it keeps crashing.

Another key word there is “some”, which in no way means “all”. If they meant the same thing, they wouldn’t have made 2 words for it. Who knows, they could have some secret features planned that they don’t want MS to copy before it’s release (which we all know MS does habitually, in fact most of their stuff is 1. not their idea, and 2. done a whole lot crappier than the original idea).
My point is, stop complaining and wait for officially announced features.

Grant, I use PDFCreator since about 3 years and love it. And still believe it must be provided by Firefox by default. Users need a solid way to share and archive documents. PDFs provide this. Lazy or unknowingly system admin are not deploying PDF capabilities to these users. I also believe Firefox PDF’s could more likely include links that currently PDF creator can’t, as far as I know.
Saving as PDF would be a killing feature, specially becuase Microsoft has already demonstrated it can’t achieve this (for licensing/marketing/strategy reasons) when it withdraw PDF printing from Office 2007.
Since Firefox is moving to the Cairo graphics rendering engine it should cost less to achieve this in terms of additional download/memory footprint. I would like to know the exact cost though, but I guess it’s not possible right now.

Real Zoom is (for me) the #1 item to implement. That could mean a lot less of work to design web sites.

I’ve been wishing for years that Firefox would grow to implement something similar to http://www.avantbrowser.com/
The ability to browse with multiple screens is a priceless feature. Copying and pasting from one screen to another, or comparing prices/features of a product for example is a lot simpler with Avant. However Firefox rules and there’s just nothing Avant will ever be able to do about it. ;)

I agree that the ability to group toolbars together on a single line would be very useful. This is a feature that has long existed in IE…you don’t realize how some of those little things really matter until you move from IE to something else!

PDF is no solution. I don’t need YA PDF creation implementation on my drive (I have OpenOffice, and three different print to PDF drivers, which also addresses your “PDF should use print style sheet” wish). What’s really required is a proper page web page archive format (WAR file, or the MARs some older hacked together beta plugin for win32 could make) that can be viewed natively, and extracted with common tools (tar+gz, zip) for use by other browsers or indexing.
I hope the “remote bookmarks” ends up being a proper reimplementation of the baby-thrown-out-with-the-bathwater known as roaming, and not some clone of the google bookmarks add-on.

Firefox is the only browser that lacks a real ZOOM (not simple text enlargement) feature.
Real Zoom is more important than all these other features.

Sounds like a good idea. Lets just hope they stick with the roots of Firefox when they first released it. Oh, and they find a way to stop making firefox suck up 99.999% of system resources for no apparent reason. Other than that, I love firefox and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

I hope they fix the forms of FireFox for mac, some elements of webpages, like radio buttons, dropdown menus, forms, are horrible, and even hard to use. With safari, none of these problems arise.

One enhancement that is overdue - in the “organize bookmarks” window, when I do a search for a link - how do I determine what folder that link is in? I’d like to tab (move focus) to the left panel and have it highlight the appropriate folder.

I would like to recommend adding the ability to password protect firefox profiles. Reason being, many family members might use the same computer and have bookmarks not intended for the other users to be able to use/view or to have the freedom of changing configurations or other users profiles. It gives a whole other meaning of personalizing your firefox profile and keeping if personalized. I hope this helps for firefox 3.

I don’t know about anybody else but I absolutely DESPISE the MSI installer/framework! So slow, sluggish and buggy!
Nullsoft’s NSIS is many multiple times superior.
TBH, I wouldn’t be worried about “sysadmins”. These are the types that do IT admin for large corporate or Government offices - they will be leaving IE as the desktop as they are too dumb to try anything different.
Any admin worth his salt will steer as far away as possible from MSI and use the most stable installer available, if indeed, any installer at all. This software can easily be slip-streamed into the XP installation. They will be able to make do, or even prefer to do without, an installer.

Two things (please? pretty please?)
1. Tab window : The ability to split a tab out to an independent window (without reloading the page) and to tell a window to become a tab on another window.
2. Multi-proxy : The ability to have different proxies for each window, or even each tab. As a developer I switch proxy 100+ times a day. In practice it is switching between the same pages as viewed via 3 different proxies.
And for bonus points (or if #2 cannot be done)
3. Independent-start option : The ability to start a new firefox process that will _not_ share cookies etc with the one already running. It should run as independantly as it can, so two firefoxes can be used in parallel, with different setups.

Firefox needs to be multi-session like IE7…for example me and my girlfriend can both be logged into our face book accounts on same comp at same time using IE7 but not with Firefox…i don’t know if you can build an add on for this or just simply update the existing platform, but whatever the case this would help you corner the market as besides these points Firefox is a far superior browser and being able to multi session would be better not only for your home users but also for businesses…people dont want 2 browsers loaded on there desktop IE7 is a virus/spyware magnet and i would personally like to get rid of it but cannot due to that 1 drawback of firefox.
please consider this firefox rocks and there is no need for them microsoft boneheads to have a step up on you in any aspect of the browser market,

Okay so this might be a stretch for any web browser but it would give a search engine junkie like me a great tool.
Here’s the scenarion;
I open a browser window
enter search keyword into the search bar
hold the ctrl key down and open the six to 8 most interesting links related to my keyword in separate tabs
I find the page I wish to view and grab the tab by its title and drag it to the desktop which in turn opens a new single browser of only THAT page
Then I conveniently close the browser with the unwanted keyword tabs.
Is this a dumb idea or what?

About the Download management:
It would be very nice to be able to pause a current download at any time and resume it days later.
Because once close (Firefox) all current downloads are lost.

I had to use Firefox to to read a web document that IE7 couldn’t. I decided to make Firefox my default browser and try it out. I really like the CTL+ for zooming but have to go back to using IE7 as my default browser because Firefox doesn’t wrap long lines which is a deal breaker. The whole ideal of a web browser is to help you read the web page so zooming and word wrapping are mandatory basic functionality above all else.

From a regular user standpoint, not a serious IT guy.
1) I like the speed of firefox, loads a hell of a lot faster then IE7
2) The Bookmarks Toolbar is excellent, one reason I stuck with Firefox
3) The download window is a major pain in my backside, its one more thing I have to click to get out of my view.
Integrate it into the existing look of Firefox like up top to the right of the Help menu. Plenty of room there.
4) Addons are so much easier in firefox, I agree with someone way up the list, dont make a permenant restart button, just make the addon install itself and restart itself back to the same page the user was browsing. Why ask just do it.
5) A permenant button for fast browsing (No history/passwords) is a great idea, one touch on/off is all we need. Nothing complicated please!
6) The FireFTP addon is one of the greatest addons in Firefox, a WYSIWYG with the majority of functions html coders need is defininetly lacking.
7) For the love of God, please stay away from becoming “VISTA RETARDED”. Dont go security crazy, we just want to surf.
8) The Mailto function working with web based email services would be excellent, I would give my l/r nut for that. Im sick of copy/pasteing it.

What I really like in the FF2 is the ability create a shortcut of the current web page I’m viewing. I just need to drag and drop the address from the address bar to a folder or to the desktop (to create a shortcut).
But what if I have for example 20 tabs open and I’d like to create shortcuts for everyone of them? Then I’ll have to do the same thing in each tab and that takes time!
But wouldn’t it be great if it would be possible to create shortcuts for every tab in that current browser window a lot easier and at the same time for each.
That’s why a feature should be added in the menu called for example “Send all the tabs/web pages in this current window…(create a shortcut)”. And then a option box would come and the user could choose to send them all to either to the desktop or to a folder he/she chooses.
With a feature like that making shortcuts to web pages would become very easy and fast!

I am something of a civil libertarian. In the days of the US Patriot act we all should be cognizant of the need to protect our rights for privacy from those who feel they have a right to investigate it for their own reasons, however noble or patriotic they seem. I am a user through Mozilla Firefox 3 Beta 5. I am disturbed that address bar history is kept even when other histories can be purged easily. This means that somewhere unavailable to the user is a file that persists in retaining personal information.
Personal information should be kept by information privacy only when permission is given in advance. The default setting should be “keep no tracks” and the user should be called upon to choose what amounts of information is retained.
