it would also be quite a smart move as the rendering engine behind IE is the slowest and poorest at following standards compared to the competition. this way they could make a large leap forward in those areas with virtually no research investment... and they could focus on the interface and add-ons to draw back users from firefox...
i have a hunch Chrome inspired this particular idea :)</description>
