Ballmer: Microsoft may look at WebKit

During the Power to Developers conference in Sidney, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft CEO was asked why Microsoft insists in building its own rendering engine,  when there are open source options that have demonstrated to be better and faster implementing web standards.

Ballmer’s answer:

There will still be a lot of proprietary innovation in the browser itself so we may need to have a rendering service.

Open source is interesting. Apple has embraced WebKit and we may look at that, but we will continue to build extensions for IE 8.

I guess this is almost news as he could have just discarded the possibility completely.

    that would be so cool!
it would also be quite a smart move as the rendering engine behind IE is the slowest and poorest at following standards compared to the competition. this way they could make a large leap forward in those areas with virtually no research investment… and they could focus on the interface and add-ons to draw back users from firefox…
i have a hunch Chrome inspired this particular idea :)

Imagine how easy a webdeveloper’s day could be without Trident.
