Firefox 3 Beta 2, robots and aliens

If you have tried Firefox 3 Beta 2, on first start you reach this page:

Firefox 3 Beta 2 first run page

Do you see the giant robot? The flying UFOs? The Firefox logo? Did you notice it links to Mozilla Links? That was easy.

Do you see what it has to do with Firefox 3 Beta 2? Didn’t think so. At least not immediately, but hopefully you will squeeze your brain and find it out.

Then with your last drop of sanity you will write your theory and may get a Firefox T-shirt.

What does a robot and UFOs have to do with Firefox. Beats me. Looks more like nightmare of destruction of good things that Firefox has.

My impression of Firefox 3 beta 2 is that Mozilla is so wrapped up in promoting Places (tags) that it has suppressed use of the much more important Keyword shortcut. So rather than building up with a comprehensive properties dialog with Name, Location, Keyword, Tags, Description, bookmark folder, into a terrific infrastructure and a improved properties dialog with Ctrl+D or the Quick Bookmarks (Star), they collapse together, but it’s human nature to blame bad things on outside forces, so that might be the robot and ufos.

People spend 5 seconds looking at a page to decide if they like it or not, my guess is that a giant robot appeals to the kind of people Firefox appeals to.

I work at a large dotcom (yeah, there are still those around) and we have a game here where we read customer feedback and then try to guess the user agent. Firefox users typically seem younger, love bulleted lists of suggestions/complaints, and generally use complete sentences. Perhaps robots, too.

The name of Robot is “Minefield”. The robot is destroing the city controlled by other’s browsers and is showing the light/logo of the salvation: Firefox 3!!

Michael Reichardt said on December 22, 2007, 11:38 am:

As you can see, the Firefox ist surrounding the Planet like a defense-shield.

The alien robot is trying to attack the planet. I suppose it’s the evil IE robot from the distant planet Redmond whos evil regents Bgates and Sballmer try to invade our planet and lead the inhabitants into slavery.

Our only hope is the little Firefox, full of magic, which can help us to fight against IE’s evil plans…

I have to agree with Michael Reichardt, nice interpretation :)

FireFox purpose is cover and protect our information highway from outside robotic intruders, like new species of alien virus, which continue to invade our cyberspace world. These new species makes our web world harder to work in, for they destroy and brake information highway through open ports that cause our data to disappear in black holes. These new species of virus brake down our cybory adaptation to these hostile environment, will in turn cause mechanical devices to fail from time to time that is vital to our extension in is cyberworld of our.

FireFox purpose is provide a protective covering for our information highway from outside robotic intruders, like the new species of alien virus, which continue to invade our cyberspace world. These new species makes our web world harder to work in, for they destroy and brake bridges that link us to the great information highway we use daily. These virus find there way through open ports that once where close, which now cause our data to disappear in black holes. And in turn these new species help brake down our cybory adaptation to these hostile environment. And in turn will destroy mechanical devices vital to daily cyber operation and shout down our information highway for good!

MY THOUGHTS OF THE WAY YOU PRESENT FIREFOX, BUT AS FAR AS ALIENS ARE CONCERNED, I HAVENT READ THE COMICS YET. IT WOULD BE NICE IF FIREFOX QUIT DELETING MY LINKS. THE WAY ITS RUNNING HAS ME LOOKING ELSE WHERE FOR ANOTHER WEB SITE FOR MY BROWSER. BUT SEE IF YOU CAN GET STUMBLEUPON ON MY FIREFOX FRONT PAGE. IF YOU CAN I’LL DELETE INTERNET EXPLORER BROWSER AND BRING IT BACK TO FIREFOX. I JUST DONT LIKE BLOCKERS. I LIKE TO THINK FOR MYSELF AND FREEDOM OF SPEECH. I SUGGEST YOU READ THIS GOOD.

I miss the Firefox Dino, then a Robot is cool too. But, like most people not quite sure what it has to do with Firefox???

The only theory I have: The giant retro FF3 robot is converting Silicon Valley, shooting down all the nasty Microsoft villains. The glowing FF3 batman symbol is signaling other robots from the Mozilla mother planet to join in the battle of Open Source vs. commercial…hmm…am i close???

On a side note, I help organize/contribute to a student non-profit open source project and user group, PHUG – PHP Toronto, we are also blogging about the new Robo Splash Screen!!! If you would like to blog check us out at http://www.phug.ca .

To me it looks like marketing that isn’t required. When I first launched Fx and saw this graphic I thought to myself; “yep beta.”

MICHAEL SCHMITZ said on January 26, 2008, 6:17 pm:

CROP CIRCLES ARE FOR INCOMING U.F.O.’S FOR DIRECTION TO THEIR BASES IN CAVES BELOW OCEAN SURFACES. LIKE BERMUDA TRIANGLE. I’M A INVENTOR, BUT IF I HAD THE MONEY, IN 4 YEARS I COULD PROVE THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE IS A ALIEN BASE AND AT THE SAME TIME SHOW ACTUAL FILM FOOTAGE OF INCOMING AND OUTGOING SPACE CRAFT. I GREW-UP IN FT. LAUDERDALE. ALSO WITH THE INSTALLATION OF MY TSUNAMI DESTROYER CAN EASILY PROVE MY POINTS. I’M AWAITING ON A PROPOSAL TO INSTALL MY DESTROYERS AROUND AMERICA. ALSO I’VE FIGURED OUT HOW COME THE HURRICANES ARE 30 TIMES BIGGER THAN NORMAL AND IT FITS TO A TEE.

MICHAEL SCHMITZ said on January 26, 2008, 6:45 pm:

DRAWING ALIEN ATTENTION.= ITS SIMPLE, ANYTHING INVENTED OUT OF OUR WORLD IS ALIEN AND AT THE SAME TIME CURIOUS FOR SOMETHING NEW EXCITING AND DIFFERENT, LIKE ROBOTS FROM OUTSIDE EARTH, OR DO YOU SEE THEM BEING BORN HERE? TO GIVE YOU SOME FACTS TO THINK ABOUT. ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO, OUR ASTRONOMERS KNEW HOW MANY PLANETS WE COULD SEE FROM EARTH. UP TO AT LEAST A DEFINITE NUMBER WERE KNOWN FOR CENTURIES, YET 2 OR 3 NEW ONES HAVE APPEARED. PLANET SIZE BALLS,THIS MEANS 2 OR 3 LARGE PLANET LOOK ALIKES ARE INSIGHT NOW. I’VE ASKED OUR LARGEST TELESCOPES TO KEEP TRACK OF THEM, SINCE THEY WERE’NT THEIR BEFORE AND TO PLOT ANY MOVEMENT WHETHER LEFT, RIGHT, OR AT US, BY TAKING PICTURES AND MATCHING THEM UP TO THE PREVIOUS PICTURES COMPARED TO THE CO-ORDINANCE OF DIRECTION OF OUR TELESCOPES. GLOBAL WARMING HAS BEEN GRADULE, BUT NOT BY HUMANS, BUT BY ALIENS FOR COLONIZATION AND MY BELIEF IS THAT THE TEAR IN THE MILE THICK OZONE WAS PURPOSELY PUT THERE TO HEAT-UP OUR PLANET TO DESTROY ALL LIFE SO THAT THE INCOMING PLANET-TYPE SPACE CRAFTS HOUSING THE ALIEN BEINGS CAN ASSUME COLONIZATION OF EARTH. LAUGH AS MUCH AS YOU WANT, BUT DO IT NOW, BECAUSE LATER YOU WONT BE. THE CROP CIRCLES ARE PATTERNS FOR INCOMING SPACE CRAFT. THIS IS MY OPINION PLUS ONE OTHER THING. I KNOW HOW TO STOP THE OCEAN FROM RISING AND AT THE SAME TIME EXPAND EACH CONTINENT AND AT THE SAME TIME BURY THE ALIEN BASES WITHOUT THEM KNOWING IT, PLUS HAVE ONE OTHER ITEM DONE TO THWART OFF ANY INCOMING SPACE CRAFT FROM FINDING THEIR BASES. ITS SO SIMPLE.

one thing that bugs me is that so much is not compatible… why can’t i use a google toolbar, for instance? why can’t i see my window live mail? fix that, would you?? or i’ll stop using this…

Joshua Pedrick said on February 14, 2008, 12:29 pm:

I think idea of robots or automatons is such a powerful anthropomorphic symbol, because it points to the idea of man creating himself as he wishes he were; strong, intelligent, immortal. When people have children, they have many desires and wishes for what their children will become, beautiful, wealthy, powerful, etc. I think the use of the image of a robot with Firefox, points to these concepts. The robot, represents the dream “child” or the desired self of many developers. It starts as something simple, but then eventually becomes ‘alive.’ The developers have not only created something alive, but also a friend. Perhaps, as Firefox continues to be developed a transition will be made, from “tool” to friend. I think the movie “Edward Scissorhands” explores these ideas about robots fairly well.

In addition, I think that robots as improved-humans might allude to Firefox being superior to other browsers. Perhaps even being the first precursor to a “robot(browser)-revolution” as in matrix or iRobot, a browser which becomes self aware seeks the good of all… perhaps by enslaving all browsers in a pink goo and harvesting theiruser interface concepts in order to continue it’s own survival and the survival of all browsers… or maybe not. :)

I think the robot signifies all the security dangers of the internet that’s taking over and making the internet a dangerous place with Firefox Mozilla helping to plug them and make it a more secure place.
