Extension developers prompted to upgrade for Firefox 2

Firefox Add-onsJustin Scott, has posted a call to Firefox extension developers to upgrade their extensions and make them compatible with Firefox 2 within the next 3 weeks. On July 9, outdated extensions will be sent to the sandbox, an area reserved for add-ons not approved for general availability and usually reserved for add-ons waiting for approval.

While I don’t expect a large percent of the 800 outdated add-ons to get upgraded I find it a sensible decision that gives developers a reasonable time frame to upgrade and will ensure Mozilla Add-ons users will be offered compatible add-ons only.

It makes even more sense considering Firefox 1.5 is no longer officially supported by Mozilla which means no more security patches for starters. Even further, Firefox 1.5 users will be prompted to upgrade to Firefox 2 in the next few days .

If your favorite extension hasn’t been updated yet, you may want to ping the developer and kindly ask him/her to keep being your hero.

Not likely they didn’t have enough time. Fx 2 was released in October 2006 and heck support was suppose to end in April of this year but with the delays in getting Fx 1.5.0.12 out, support lasted well into May.

I guess it is a case that the developers just don’t want to bother with 2.0 compatible version.
