Cooliris has released PicLens, a Firefox extension that enhances online picture browsing in a variety of photo sharing services including Flickr, Picasa, Facebook, Google Images, Yahoo! Images, Friendster and any other site that supports Media RSS, a web feed adaptation that includes references to pictures and thumbnails.
PicLens works very transparently with no settings to tweak. You just visited one of the supported photo sharing sites and when you hover a picture you will notice a semi-transparent play button overlayed. Click the button and the full size version of the picture will be displayed in a nice looking full screen browser.
Below the picture, a scrollable thumbnail strip is displayed to quickly reach another picture in the same photo stream (another name for the mentioned Media RSS).

As good as it is, some basic features are missing like an option to save the full size picture or to view the current photo stream as a sideshow.
PicLens is available for Firefox on Windows only. Mac OS X users are prompted to use the Safari version instead while Linux is not currently supported.
PicLens is not yet available for download from Mozilla Add-ons, but you can get it from PicLens web site.
Obviously I don’t. You can try to install it in a new profile. If the problem is gone it could be an incompatibility with some other extension.
Wow! That sounds like a great tool! Didn’t know it was that good. I’ll definitively look into it. (Or straight at it, perhaps.)
Hello:
Thanks so much for posting on PicLens. We really appreciate it!
As the Firefox and Safari versions are still in Beta phase, we’ll be upgrading them quite frequently to add features and fix bugs. If you experience a bug or are having a hard time installing, please definitely contact us by clicking the feedback button at http://www.piclens.com.
Thanks, again.

Just a quick update . . .
Since this article first posted last year, PicLens has really transformed. PicLens now sports a full-screen 3D environment where you can instantly explore and enjoy 1000s of photos and videos on websites including YouTube, Facebook, Flickr, Googe Image Search, and many more.
More to come . . . :)

Still waiting for PicLens for Linux … but loving it – as soon as I tried it I went out and adapted my Gallery2 pages for use with PicLens; sadly I don’t get the benefit though as I use Ubuntu for my desktop computer. just come across Greased Lightbox though which looks to be occupying “Piclens for Linux”‘s space for now …
Incidentally would it be possible to use depth to enable a parallel picture search, top layer Google Images, next layer for Flickr etc.. Maybe that would be too cluttered?

Did anyone else have issues with this add-on? I tried installing twice, and on each occasion it hung up Firefox when I clicked on the “play” icon…
